Involving consumers
Scottish consumers should have the opportunity to be involved at various levels
in the process of designing, planning and monitoring services:
defining their needs, identifying appropriate ways to meet those needs,
and
commenting on the outcomes.
The SCC has promoted the involvement of consumers in a wide range of settings for many years. There is increasing recognition of the importance of this in different policy areas, including health, housing and community planning.
Making Consumer Organisations work for Consumers in Scotland.
The report gives practical guidance on how consumer organisations, operating at UK and Scottish level, can best represent and promote the consumer interest in Scotland. The report, which draws on the experience of, and evidence from, existing consumer organisations, sets out:
- Why we need strong consumer organisations
- The particular impact that devolution has had on consumer interest representation
- Principles of good practice for all consumer or service-user organisations.
Consumer organisations face key challenges ahead in seeking to achieve change in the consumer interest. Meeting these challenges will require them to be pro-active in working with providers of goods and services, policy-makers and regulators, advancing policies that have a sound basis of research evidence. This report aims to give consumer organisations, and all who work with them, an agenda to build on for the future.
