Housing
Safe, warm housing is a basic need for everyone. However
the problems facing housing in Scotland are well documented;
- declining housing stock
- homelessness
- low demand housing
- poor quality housing
The impacts of poor housing extend to other areas of people's lives, including their long term health and educational attainment.
Improving the rights of consumers of housing
The SCC has worked to improve the rights of consumers of housing in Scotland.
Through the production of consumer guides, the SCC has directly
provided information of use to consumers. The SCC is a strong
advocate of tenant participation
and improving the rights of house purchasers. Recent policy work has focused on landlord accreditation schemes and the introduction of compulsory registration for landlords, the rights of purchasers of new build homes and the proposed single survey and purchasers' information pack.
The SCC was a key member of the Housing Improvement Task Force and currently sits on a number of working groups to develop policy in this area including the Scottish Government working group on the implementation of the Housing (Scotland) Act 2006, the Advisory Group for Landlord Accreditation Scotland and the Scottish Government Purchasers' Information Advisory Group.
