Europe

Much of UK and Scottish legislation follow on from EU Regulations and Directives. Many of the wider policy issues that are of concern to the SCC, and which have a real impact on the day-to-day lives of consumers in Scotland, are determined at EU level.
These include, for example:
-
food issues
-
the regulation of markets in essential services like energy and telecommunications
-
laws concerning consumer credit.
It is vital that the particular needs of consumers in Scotland are identified and acted upon by policy and decision makers in the EU. There are also particular issues that will impact on people living in remote and rural Scotland and in the islands, at the outer periphery of the EU map. The SCC takes every opportunity to engage in European consumer issues where they have a specific impact on consumers in Scotland.
We also work with our colleagues in the National Consumer Council to ensure that its work on Europe takes account of the Scottish dimension.
Through the NCC, we have corporate membership of the Bureau Europeen des Unions de Consommateurs (BEUC), a European consumer umbrella body based in Brussels. BEUC is formally recognized by both the European Commission and the European Parliament as the body that speaks for consumer organizations in member states.
