Supporting children and young people's learning: a handbook forBook or consumer guide parents when their child needs additional support

This guide is aimed at helping parents get the best out of the new Additional Support for Learning Act. The guide was written by Shelley Gray, Policy Officer for Children in Scotland and Jennifer Wallace, Policy Manager at the Scottish Consumer Council.

The handbook is being published at a time of significant change in the system for children and young people in need of additional support to benefit from education. The Education (Additional Support for Learning) Act 2004, which came into force in November 2005, replaces entirely the old system of Special Educational Needs. This guide aims to help parents through the system, explaining key terms and processes, to ensure that they can get the best for their children.

Supporting children and young people’s learning is available from The Stationery Office, priced £8.99 www.tsoshop.co.uk
